How much money should I save before buying a house?

Chelsea Levinson, JD

In its 100 years as a city, Alamo Heights has established itself as a bustling residential community. Located just to the north of San Antonio, the city is a convenient location for commuters or future residents looking for a suburban community with all the nearby services of a big city.

From plentiful shopping and fine dining to lush golf links and serene hiking trails, this quaint community of around 8,374 residents has activities suitable for all ages and lifestyles.

But every draw has its drawbacks, and the sky-high housing costs are probably Alamo Heights’ biggest drawback. That said, any families, professionals, or retirees who do plant roots in this hub for culture, jobs, and top-rated schools will get their money's worth.

3 things to know before buying a home in Alamo Heights, according to locals

1. It’s a city inside a city

Alamo Heights is a small, 2.1-square-mile city located just to the north of San Antonio. Other nearby cities include Olmos Park and Terrell Hills, which are also surrounded by San Antonio. They all make up the San Antonio Metropolitan Area.

2. The community recently turned 100 years old

Alamo Heights was established a century ago in 1922 following concerns that San Antonio planned to annex the region to increase its tax base without providing services to the community. A citizens’ meeting was quickly called to form a city government, which passed with unanimous support. As the area became more developed in the years that followed, the community fought hard to provide amenities without losing its character as a residential area.

3. The schools are top-notch

Alamo Heights Independent School District dates back to 1909 when it was just one school in a two-room wooden frame building. Today, the district boasts some of the highly-rated schools in not only the state but the country. Alamo Heights High School ranks in the top 5% nationally, with 95.5% of graduates attending college. A majority of the AHISD teachers have more than 11 years of experience.

The top 4 things to do in Alamo Heights

1. Enjoy the town’s greenspaces

One of the many reasons people flock to Alamo Heights is its ample greenspace in and around the city. Just west of the community is Olmos Basin Park, which boasts 5 miles of dirt trails and 2 miles of paved paths for bikers, runners, and walkers alike. Locals can give their dogs some off-leash time at the popular Alamo Heights Bark Place, which includes a water trough and shaded areas for the pups to cool off. Golfers have a plethora of courses to choose from within a 5-mile radius, including the nearby Quarry Golf Club and San Antonio Country Club.

2. Shop for everything you need

Shopping enthusiasts will feel right at home in Alamo Heights. Just north of the city is the 580,000-square-foot Alamo Quarry Market, an open-air plaza with over 65 retailers that includes Ann Taylor, Lululemon, and Banana Republic. Also nearby, The Shops at Lincoln Heights have a pet store, liquor store, jewelers, and an H-E-B supermarket. Readers can frequent Nowhere Bookshop right in town.

3. Discover delicious treats and drinks

There’s no shortage of food and drink options in Alamo Heights. Kick off your day with a cup of coffee and a pastry at Merit Coffee, which has live chickens in its outdoor seating area that the cafe sources its eggs from. At Cappy’s Restaurant, diners can enjoy the mouth-watering New Orleans Gumbo or Mustang Chicken. For dessert, look no further than the family-owned Honchos Churros for a churro in ice cream with a wide variety of toppings.

4. Visit local attractions with family

In addition to its parks, Ample Heights has fun (and educational) places nearby to take the whole family. Just east of the city is the McNay Art Museum, the first modern art museum in Texas with free admission to see over 22,000 works. South of the Alamo Heights in Brackenridge Park, the massic San Antonio Zoo is a nonprofit with over 750 different species and over a million visitors each year. There’s also the 38-acre San Antonio Botanical Garden with 35 endangered and rare species.
